Panic Bars – Back to Basics
Did you know that panic bars are required by law in many jurisdictions for commercial buildings’ emergency exits and fire routes? This hardware is usually required in ‘hazardous’ occupancies; being used mainly for mass evacuation from fires or explosions. Panic bars can be installed on wood, metal and aluminium door frames.
There are countless types of panic bars available for you to choose from. The three basic hardware types are:
- Touchpad Panic Bar – most commonly used in modern buildings.
- Crossbar Panic Bar – used mainly for glass doors or to create a vintage look.
- Recessed Panic Bar – used to reduce projection of hardware on door, requires a cut-out in the door.
When looking at panic bars, one should begin with those three basic styles and then add more detail for what they’re looking for exactly. This includes the finish of the hardware, the electrical functions required, the trims and control, and so on. It’s also very important to remember that although one particular panic bar is desired, it’s also vital to keep in mind the door frames you’re installing the hardware onto.
