Skeleton Keys—Flash to the Past
Skeleton keys are often referred to as a “pass key”. This type of master key is well-known for its filed down edge, making it easier to open numerous locks. The name skeleton keys came about due to the keys stature since it has been reduced to its most necessary parts. These keys were usually used on warded locks. A warded lock is one of the eldest designs of locks dating as far back as ancient Chinese & Roman times.
These locks (although not commonly seen or used in North America) are still put to use in the UK and in Ireland. Hotels are an example of where a skeleton key has been put to use in the past. If the hotel was operated without the use of electronic locks, then housekeeping would have used a skeleton key in order to access the rooms.
Key styles and security has definitely altered quite drastically since the use of skeleton keys. Now we have access to keyless entry locks, high security keys, and other basic keys. We’d love to help you decide what type of locking mechanism has the best security for your space or documents.
