Battle of the Fittest: Mortise V.S Rim Cylinders

Battle of the Fittest: Mortise V.S Rim Cylinders

The varieties available for Mortise and Rim locks are seemingly endless. These two locks are commonly mistaken for one another. Let’s take a brief look from within the physical lock, at the two cylinders. When viewing both cylinders inside of the lock, you would notice the significant differences, such as:

            Mortise Cylinder

·         Threaded body held in place with set screw.

·         The cam (camshaft) is located at the back of cylinder, allowing the rotating cam to activate the lock as the key is turned.

·         The action of the lock is occurring inside the door & downward.

Rim Cylinder

·         A thin plate of metal on the back of the door with two mounting bolts.

·         Looks similar to a flat head screwdriver and this cylinder is activated using its stem.

·         The activation occurs at backside of the door and straight back.

There is no actual rivalry between the two cylinders, just difference in security solutions. It is important to understand the different locks available to secure your residential or commercial space.
