Restricted Keyways: Pros & Cons

Restricted Keyways: Pros & Cons

What are restricted keyways you ask? Restricted keyways are only ordered through authorized dealers; whether it’s new cores needed or spare keys. This is a great solution for businesses that worry about unwanted people having access to their units through key duplication by employees. If an employee quits or is fired, they only need to return the key back to the employer. There would be no requirement to rekey the existing locks because they wouldn’t have been able to make copies of the key at all. Since these keyways are higher security, the price tag is more expensive in comparison to the unrestricted keyways.

Now that you know the positive factors about having a higher security restricted keyway, what is the downside? The main con about restricted keyways is that you would have to order the keys and cores in advance.  Often times these keys are not available for the same day, which means that the owner would need to plan ahead should they need any more keys or locks.

Aside from businesses using restricted keyways to protect their space; these keyways are also common in condominiums.
